Preguntas Frecuentes — straight answers from Dr. Ruy Amador, DC

Why do I get numbness and tingling in my hand when my neck hurts?
Neck pain with numbness and tingling in the hand can happen when irritation affects the nerves coming from the neck, but it needs a proper evaluation first.  The symptom may shows where the nerve is being felt, not automatically where the problem started, which is why hand symptoms can come from the neck, shoulder, posture strain, or repetitive work.  The syptoms, patient history, physical evaluation, and it may require diagnostic imaging.  If the numbness is progressive, severe, or paired with weakness, that deserves prompt medical attention.  Nerve symptoms should be traced to their source and treated.  If a nerve is in pain and is left untreated, it can allow damage to progress and may cause permanent physical impairment and chronic pain.  The nerves are the communication lines of the body and are the distress signals when something is not normal.  Don't take pain killer to mask or ingnore the pain because that will make your pain worse in the long term.  Come to Dolce Vita Chiropractic or see your own Chiroprator and get evaluated.
Is chiropractic adjustment safe for lower back pain and sciatica?
Chiropractic care is generally safe for common lower back pain and sciatica-type complaints when a proper evaluation is done first.  The chiropractic evaluation is a safety that determines if it's the right procedure for the patient.  There are different ways, different techniques that a chiropractor can use also to deliver a chiropractic adjustment.  However, it always begins with an evaluation of the patient, knowing their patients medical history, ruling out red flags, and matching the technique to the person rather than forcing the same approach on everyone.  In Garland TX, a responsible chiropractor should tell you when your case fits conservative care and when it belongs with a medical doctor or a different specialist instead.  At Dolce Vita Chiropractic it always starts with screening, not cracking.
Why does my back pain keep coming back even after I feel better?
Back pain keeps coming back when the symptom settles down because you may have rested and temporarly aleviated the symptoms but the underlying condition that is causing the movement problem has not been corrected.  Many people feel better once inflammation drops, then return to the same lifting, driving, sleeping, or sitting habits with the same spinal dysfunction still in place.  That is why one-off relief care often fades, especially for working adults in Garland, Sachse, and Wylie who keep putting stress on the same area.  Pain that is masked with pain killers or ointments returns; pain that is corrected resolves.  You are human and nothing is for ever, meaning eventually you my suffer a new injury (new episode) as you get older and stop exercising but a new episode may take months or even years if the initial injury was addressed and healed properly.  Dr. Ruy Amador, DC recommends that adults between the ages of 30 to 60 years of age get screened and adjusted about every 2 to 3 months in general for wellness (preventive care) and not waiting for pain or disfunction to be the driving factor for seeking chiropractic care.  However, each person is different and has different job stressors and medical conditions so consult your Chiropractor for your individual proper recommendations.
Is chiropractic safe for back and neck pain, and when should I see a medical doctor instead?
Chiropractic is generally safe for common back and neck pain when the problem is properly screened.  If you believe your issue is in layman's terms some thing mechanical like related to a muscle strain, pinch nerve, bone alignment and it suddenly started it is most likely a Chiropractic issue.  If you believe your back or neck pain is related to something more ominus, severe disease, cancer, tumor, etc... then your best bet is to start with your Medical Doctor.  However, your are safe either way because both the Dr. in Chiropractic and Dr. in Medicine will review your medical history and do an exam evaluating you medical and determining if its something they can treat or need to refer out to another specialist because of the patient's symptoms and condition.  However, if you have any of the following red flags such as loss of bladder or bowel control, progressive weakness or numbness, fever with back pain, or severe trauma, because those are red flags outside routine musculoskeletal care you should seek urgent medical care at a hospital and skip the visit to the MD or the Chiropractor to be on the safe side.  Chiropractic safe care starts with knowing who should not be adjusted and who needs medical triage first.  Chiropractic begins with screening, not cracking.
What happens at your first chiropractic visit at Dolce Vita Chiropractic in Garland?

Your first chiropractic visit starts with an evaluation, the out come of the evaulation will determine if the chiropractor can help you or needs to refer you out to another provider.  The evaluation usually includes your health history, a conversation about how the pain behaves, movement and orthopedic testing, and a clear explanation of what patterns are likely driving the problem.  If care is appropriate, the next step is mapping out a structured course of corrective care rather than just chasing symptoms.  Proper evaluation comes before correction, because guessing is not treatment.

Can a chiropractor help with numbness and tingling in my hand from my neck?
Numbness and tingling in the hand can be related to neck and shoulder mechanics and yes we can help you here at Dolce Vita Chiropractic.  The root cause of the problem and the extent of the injury or issue needs to be determined.  The first step is to do a proper physical exam because the pain location does not confirm the source and all the symptoms and patient medical history need to be evaluated, further testing like X-Rays or MRI may be required.  Poor posture, repetitive work, diabetes mellitus, or irritated joints in the neck can change how nerves react.  Mechanical loads can do damage over a period of time even if the load is not significant.  Gravity is a continous load on the spine, especially for people who drive long hours or work at a desk in Garland or Sachse.  Sitting is more stressful on the spine when compared to standing or laying down.  If symptoms are progressive, severe, or include weakness, that requires prompt medical evaluation.  Nerve symptoms should never be ingnored as they will develop into something worse like lose of function and athrophy.  Don't guess, come see Dr. Ruy Amador, DC

Why does a chiropractic adjustment make a popping sound, and is that bad?
The popping sound is usually gas releasing from a joint as pressure changes, this normaly signals the joint has been release or now it may be moving with more ROM.  The poping by itself it is not the goal and is not the treatment.  The popping is not a sign of damage either.  Some effective adjustments make noise and some do not, because the real objective is improved joint motion and reduced mechanical stress.  What matters for our the patients in Garland Tx. or anywhere in the world is whether pain is reduced or eliminated and the functional movement is restored or improved over a structured course of care.  It has little or nothing to do if the joint makes sound happened during the chiropractic adjustment.  Noise is a byproduct; reducing or eliminating pain, and restoring functional motion is the goal with chiropractic care.
Should I see a chiropractor after a car accident if I don’t feel pain right away?
The answer is "Depend on each individual case" - each case is different by persons age, gender, location of their body in the car the moment of the accident, the speed of the crash, did the air bags deployed, it has many variables and version of accidents.  There might be delayed pain due to adrenaline during the time of the accident and shortly after a car accident.  The body may feel differently a few hours or days after the accident.  It is common because inflammation, muscle guarding, and joint irritation often show up hours to days later.  People in Garland and Sunnyvale often feel shaken but functional at first, then wake up with neck stiffness, headaches, or low back pain after the adrenaline wears off.  It is recommended to call 911 right after a car accident and have EMS check you for immediate care, you may need to be trasported to the hospital.  If there is no severe trauma and you are released by the EMS or Hospital than we can do a proper evaluation for pain, muscular and skeletal function.  As chiropractors we can help determine whether the problem is a musculoskeletal injury that needs corrective care.  Feeling fine right after a car accident is not always evidence of not being affected by the car accident.  So, if you have any doubts come to Dolce Vita Chiropractic here in Garland Tx. and Dr. Ruy Amador, DC can help you.
